Palliative Care Expert Interview: Vandana Mahajan
Interview with Vandana Mahajan, palliative care counsellor and cancer survivor.
Palliative care aims to improve quality of life of the patients and their family who are facing life-threatening illnesses by providing holistic healing or support to them, irrespective of the intent of the treatment. With increasing number of people living with chronic conditions, some of which are terminal in nature, there is no better time to educate ourselves on palliative care.
Vandana Mahajan is a palliative care counsellor with a post graduate diploma in integrative counselling. She is trained in palliative and bereavement counselling. Vandana is a cancer survivor and a cancer coach who has been conducting motivational talks at various forums, and provides support to breast cancer patients through interactive sessions at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
In this interview, I try to understand palliative care from Vandana’s lens, the importance of clinician-counsellor interactions, the role of primary caregivers for cancer patients, and how palliative care is being increasingly sought by a younger patient population.
