Do-It-Yourself (DIY) as the name gives is a way to build, create, repair and do things on your own. It may not be alien to folks that have grown up in households where everything was literally done at home, and nothing was ever wasted. Over a course of time, we have substituted many of these skills with our dependency on external labor and machines, and also created a great deal of waste along with it. The modern version of the DIY ethic is associated with the maker culture. A quick search will reveal a lot more on the topic and you can join some fun forums too. I am sure they have a Zoom-friendly version now!
With all the information on the crisis making things unpredictable, what for sure is predictable is we will spend more time at home, working or otherwise.
Yesterday, my wife and I made a long list of skills and classified them as basic (“survival”), advanced (“comforable living”) and premium (“you can sell in the future”). These are skills that would not only help us navigate the lockdown but also make it fun and lasting beyond these times. When I assigned points to these skills, I noticed that she is in the 90th percentile while I linger in the 40th at best. Much to catch up!
